GROWING UP IN THE WILD

Forest Grove is a fully outdoor nursery based in Hackney for 3-5 year olds

OUR VISION

Our vision is to enable children to enjoy learning through play; helping them to make sense of the world whilst developing their physical, cognitive and social skills. We provide a safe and stimulating outdoor environment that makes learning fun, is guided by the Forest School approach and follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum.

The natural world offers endless learning opportunities that support our children to be curious and creative problem solvers. Our children learn through first-hand real-life experiences; are able to follow their own interests and we provide them the tools they need to manage their own risks

We have high expectations of our children and follow an approach that develops their independence, resilience and self-confidence. We believe that Forest Grove Hackney offers the optimum learning environment for our little explorers.

Our approach

  • Learner centred

At Forest Grove we adopt a learner-centred pedagogical approach, which is driven by the  interest of the learners and responds to meeting their needs.

This ‘child-led’ approach puts the learner first. Our highly-skilled practitioners are responsive to the needs and interests of the children and follow their lead to learning.

Children thrive in a child-led environment. Framing learning within a child’s interests instills within the child a life-long love of learning.

  • Play based

Play is a child’s work: when a child is deep in play, deep learning is taking place.

‘Play’ is a key component of learning at Forest Grove and play-based learning encourages a child’s imagination and keeps them stimulated, motivated and curious.

Extended play in an open-ended environment allows time for further creativity and imagination. Play-based learning promotes creative thinking and problem solving.

Most importantly, ‘Learning through Play’ keeps learning fun!

  • Learning through Nature

The natural environment offers endless learning opportunities and resources. At Forest Grove our practitioners are specifically trained to utilise the natural world to help children to progress in all areas of their learning and development.

Research has proven that children develop best from physical, hands-on learning, as these experiences are more memorable. The natural environment is the perfect place for a child to access first-hand learning experiences.

Learning through Nature is also a powerful way of keeping a child connected to the natural world, resulting in profound benefits which are long-lasting. Children who develop an early connection with nature are more likely to grow up caring for the environment and having a passion for conservation and sustainability.

At Forest Grove we foster the relationship between the learner and the natural world.

The Forest School approach is based on the concept of an outdoor learning environment, which focuses on play-based learning, and is child-led. The approach provides all learners opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland or natural environment. Learners achieve because there is no expectations as to what the end result should look like.

At Forest Grove, our Forest School Kindergarten is a fully outdoor classroom, working year round to the Ofsted term and education structure. We also offer an out-of-term Holiday Club , an After School Club and a weekly Nature Club for 2-year olds.

Forest School activities typically include wood work; den building; building a bug hotel; nature watching; foraging; fire-making; cooking on fire; roaming and nature walks; nature based arts & crafts using natural materials; making bird feeders and nest boxes; using ropes and rope swings; learning about sustainability; mud kitchen play and jumping in muddy puddles!
